How to become an accountant in the Gulf: a realistic route

What employers across the GCC actually look for, in what order, and where structured training fits alongside professional examinations.

How to become an accountant in the Gulf: a realistic route
Career

The order most people get wrong

The common route is to register for a professional qualification first and hope the underlying knowledge arrives with it. It rarely does. Professional examinations assume a working command of double entry, ledgers and financial statements; candidates who arrive without it spend their first attempts learning what they should have known before starting.

Build the foundation first

Accounting Fundamentals and Bookkeeping Essentials together give the foundation: the accounting equation, double entry, ledgers, reconciliation, and a set of draft accounts. Six to eight weeks part time, and it changes the experience of everything that follows.

Then specialise, then qualify

With the foundation in place, choose a direction. Reporting leads through Financial Accounting & Reporting to Financial Statement Preparation. Tax leads through VAT and corporate tax. Payroll is a defensible specialism in its own right and is under-supplied across the region. Professional examinations sit alongside this rather than replacing it.

What employers actually ask for

In practice, GCC employers weigh three things: whether you can do the work, whether your training was assessed rather than merely attended, and whether you can explain a number to someone who is not an accountant. A certificate that names its guided learning hours and its assessment method answers the second. The first and third are built by practice.

Where this is taught

The Professional Accountant Development Programme is designed for exactly this stage: accountants with a few years of experience, preparing for senior responsibility or professional examinations, or both.
